Festival season in North Charleston

Saying goodbye to summer is bittersweet. Soon, the days will be shorter and our trips to the beach will be further and fewer between. Still, with every crunch of leaves beneath our boots and each pumpkin-spice aroma we catch a whiff of, we inch closer toward festival season. From autumn on until early December, there’s no shortage of celebratory events going down in North Charleston! Here are three you won’t want to miss:

  1. Harvest Festival – Saturday, October 20, from 4pm to 7pm

Located in Olde Village of North Charleston near Park Circle, this FREE event is an ode to all things autumn! Bring the kiddos out to trick or treat on the street at participating Old Village shops with special goodie-catching bags courtesy of the City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department (while supplies last). And while you’re at it, be sure to allot some time for your little one to jump into some free games at the Kids’ Zone, experience a craft activity led by North Chuck’s Artist-in-Residence Quintin Chaplin, face painting by Carolina Party Artists, interactive drumming by RBM African DRum & DAnce, inflatables, a mechanical bull, and much more! Live music by the Spazmatics will serve as the soundtrack to kid-friendly fun and a huge selection of handmade treasures at the artist market on site. And to really get into the spooky spirit of Halloween, purchase a gourd for your kiddo to decorate at the festival’s Pop-Up Pumpkin Patch or sign your little ghoul up for the costume contest at 6pm (adults and pets are welcome to enter, too!). It truly isn’t fall, y’all, until you’ve experienced the Harvest Festival!

  1. 19th Annual Charleston Animal Society Chili Cook-Off and Oyster Roast – Saturday, November 17, from 12pm to 4pm

Is there any time-honored tradition as awesome as a food festival? This one—featuring a wealth of locally made chilis from spice aficionados across the area AND tons of roasted oysters sure to make you holler, “SHUCK YEAH!”—is coming in hot at Riverfront Park in North Charleston and promises something for every palate. On top of all the spooning chili and slurping oysters, the proceeds from this delicious event benefit the local Charleston Animal Society, a local organization that seeks to prevent cruelty to our furry friends. Get your eat on with your favorite folks—all for an excellent cause.

  1. Christmas Festival and Parade – First Friday and Saturday of December

Think it’s too early to begin thinking holly jolly and sugar plumb fairies? In North Chuck, we start celebrating the most wonderful time of the year at the start of December at the Felix C. Davis Community Center with the annual Christmas Festival and Parade. This heart-warming event kicks off on Friday at 6pm with a tree lighting on the lawn of the Community Center. Then, the holiday magic continues on Saturday from 3pm to 8pm with the Christmas Festival and Parade. The Parade begins at the corner of E. Montague and Mixson Avenues at 5pm, then winds its way down E. Montague and around historic Park Circle to spread good vibes and holiday cheer with visitors and locals alike! The Christmas Festival at the Felix C. Davis Community Center will boast plenty of children’s activities, food vendors, live music, and visits with Santa Claus! North Chuck meets the North Pole for this holly jolly occasion!
