Charleston proper gets a ton of attention for its lovely Lowcountry marshes and picturesque city streets. And those iconic palmettos. And their shrimp and grits.
Guess what sweet Southern town also boasts ALL OF THESE ELEMENTS AND MORE minus the nightmare parking situation and serious seersucker addiction? Enter North Charleston. Our chill vibes, delicious vittles, and Insta-worthy views have us gaining the attention of travelers from just up the road to all the way across the country. In fact, our grit, wit, and wonder have even inspired filmmakers to shoot some shows you’ve probably tuned into. Check out these four shows shot right here in North Chuck:
Vice Principals
Danny McBride and Walton Goggins—the stars of Vice Principals—are Southern to the core and outrageous when it comes to sense of humor. This HBO series ran for two seasons and focused on the two main characters gunning for the coveted role of principal of their highly dysfunctional school. In the process, McBride and Goggins’ characters alienate pretty much everyone through hilarious, foul-mouthed antics. See if you can spot N. Chuck’s Margle Way in season 1 (hint: there’s a big ol’ truck you simply can’t miss).
Mr. Mercedes
Murder, mystery, and mesmerizing dialogue converge is this AT&T Originals television series based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. Seasons 1 and 2 were both shot on location in various areas of North Charleston. The David E. Kelley-produced “hard-boiled detective drama” is enthralling as retired detective Bill Hodges (played by Brendan Gleeson) fixates on solving a murder that claimed the lives of 16 people. When the murderer (Harry Treadaway) shows up to taunt the detective, what starts as online cat-and-mouse game quickly escalates to a sinister plot with a potential for an even higher body count.
The Inspectors
Nominated for six daytime Emmys, The Inspectors is the only show on commercial television paid for by the United States Postal Service asset forfeiture and consumer fraud awareness funds. While the writing is a tad on the cheesy side, there’s no doubt that the purpose of the show—how to avoid falling victim to postal fraud—is an important one. This CBS all-ages crime drama has had many of its scenes filmed in North Charleston. Catch this one on Saturday mornings with the kiddos, and see if you can spot which parts were filmed in our fair city.
The Sinner
This gruesome psychological thriller on the USA Network features Jessica Biel as a tortured mother who snaps and gets all stabby on a random guy at the beach one day in front of a HUGE crowd. Why? You have to watch to find out. Don’t be tempted to cover your eyes—after all, you don’t want to miss the North Chuck-centric scenes.
