History
North Charleston promotes cross-cultural awareness to shape an appreciation of our past, present, and the future of the city. While the city itself wasn’t incorporated until 1972, the area has a rich history. In the 1600’s, Native American tribes inhabited the banks of the Ashley River. Did you know that Liberty Hill, the oldest community in what is now North Charleston, was established in 1871? In the 1900’s, the Naval Base is what led industry and economics for the city until its closure in 1996.
We have evolved from plantations and the lumber and ship building industries to now being known as the only city in the United States to produce both automobiles and airplanes. North Charleston is the third largest city in the state of South Carolina. This city now encompasses three counties: Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester.
North Charleston has experienced success, growth, and prosperity over the years. As we continue to flourish and become nationally recognized, we have great pride in our noteworthy history just waiting for you to explore.
